Weekend Reading
Hi John,
Our immigration system should strengthen our communities, not tear them apart. But right now, nearly 11 million immigrants face threats of detention, deportation, and racial profiling in their daily lives. As we prepare for a new presidential administration, Congress must do all they can to protect immigrants. It’s time that we recognize immigrants as vital members of our community by creating a pathway to citizenship for all. Send a message to Congress today! [link removed]
TAKE ACTION
Tell Congress: Vote NO on letting the government shut down rights groups [link removed]
Congress is about to vote on a dangerous bill that would let the secretary of the Treasury shut down rights groups based on a unilateral accusation of wrongdoing. This power could easily be abused to punish any groups that oppose the president or others in government. Palestinian rights groups would likely be the first targets, but any other organizations could be next. Voice your opposition today! [link removed]

Michigan's Second Look legislation: A crucial step toward justice [link removed]
By Josie Ann Lee and Pete Martel
Michigan prisons house thousands of people serving life sentences. Many of them were convicted in their youth. That's because decades of tough-on-crime policies have resulted in a system where people remain incarcerated even if they pose no threat to society. Second Look legislation would change that. It presents an opportunity to re-evaluate lengthy sentences. Ultimately, that could provide a pathway for rehabilitation and redemption for many.
