Congress returned to Washington, D.C. this week and they immediately kicked things off with leadership elections. At the very top, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson was re-elected Speaker by the House Republican conference and Senator John Thune was elected to succeed Mitch McConnell as Senate Majority Leader.

Where the House Stands

Leadership Elections

The House Republican conference voted by unanimous consent to re-elect Rep. Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House. The formal election for Speaker will be held on the House floor in January. After Johnson, Republicans filled the remaining House leadership roles with:

• Rep. Steve Scalise to serve as Majority Leader
• Rep. Tom Emmer to serve as Majority Whip
• Rep. Lisa McClain to serve as Conference Chairwoman
• Rep. Richard Hudson to serve as NRCC Chairman
• Rep. Blake Moore to serve as Conference Vice Chairman
• Rep. Kevin Hern to serve as Conference Policy Chair
• Rep. Erin Houchin to serve as Conference Secretary

Rep. August Pfluger was also elected to a prominent role and will serve as the next Chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

Congratulations to all new members of congressional leadership and to Rep. Pfluger on their positions. We look forward to working with you to advance the mandate given to Washington by the American people.

Legislation and Hearings

In the Eye of the Storm: Oversight of FEMA's Disaster Readiness and Response

On Tuesday at 2:00PM, the House Oversight Committee is scheduled to conduct a hearing into FEMA’s response to the destruction brought by Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene.

Criticism of FEMA in the aftermath of the storms was already high for their sluggish response. But that criticism reached a fever pitch when it was discovered that a FEMA supervisor told workers to “avoid homes advertising Trump” as they assisted with recovery efforts.

Filtering who gets aid based on political preferences is not only wholly un-American, it’s malicious. Congress will be investigating to uncover all the details, the extent to which these orders were given, who was involved, and how they can be held accountable. This must never happen again in our country.

Dismantle DEI Act (H.R. 8706)

Heritage Action has Key Voted the cosponsorship of the Dismantle DEI Act in an effort to encourage House members to sign their names in support of removing racially charged hiring practices, employee training, and other programs that promote racism under the guise of “diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

This bill was introduced in both chambers by Rep. Michael Cloud (R-Texas) and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance (then-Senator from Ohio).

Next week, the House Oversight Committee signaled they may take up the bill for consideration. While no formal announcement has been made, we continue to advocate for its advancement. Now is a great time to call your representatives and tell them to support this important legislation.

Defining Male and Female Act (H.R. 9218)

Ideally, a bill like this wouldn’t be needed. But the left has completely warped the boundaries of “normal” by suggesting that people can vacillate between being a man and a woman based entirely on feelings.

The Left has been defending, and encouraging men who masquerade as women to play in women's sports, change in women’s locker rooms, and use women’s bathrooms. This law would properly define male and female to ensure that federal funds will cease to flow to institutions that permit these incidents to occur.

Cosponsorship of this bill has been designated a Key Vote by Heritage Action.

Where the Senate Stands

One of Majority Leader John Thune’s most important roles will be facilitating the consideration and confirmation of judges appointed by President Trump.

President Biden has appointed nearly 25% of the federal judiciary with a total of 213 judges - the second-highest total for a single term President in more than 40 years. Many of his nominees have been highly controversial, receiving the highest average votes against confirmation of any president in American history.

But now that the American people have spoken, we must look forward to the 119th Congress which will take office in January. Every Republican must show up for every judicial nomination vote - both cloture and confirmation - and bring the outgoing president’s appointment run to an end; leaving those vacancies free for the next administration to fill.

One Last Comment for Biden

On multiple occasions, the Biden administration has pandered to younger voters by promising to “cancel” their student loans. In reality, the cost of these loans would be passed on to the 87% of adults that do not have student debt because they either never went to college, worked their way through college, or already paid their debt.

Not only are his plans unjust, but they are illegal and have suffered three consecutive defeats in court including at the Supreme Court.

Yet Biden is making one final attempt to “cancel” student debt. This plan is just as broad and illegal as the previous attempts and could cost the country up to $600 billion dollars.

But this regulation can be stopped by public comments from you. You have already submitted tens of thousands of comments in opposition to Biden’s regulations and your efforts have borne fruit. We need to do it again just one last time.
