Hi John ,

Welcome to the latest New Pennsylvania Project newsletter!

While the presidential, several statewide and congressional results were not exactly what we hoped for, we are proud of the work that we have accomplished together.

We are excited to see Speaker Joanna McClinton retain the gavel and State Senator-elect Patty Kim elevated in Dauphin County to name a few.

Our work is far from finished. In 2025, PA will elect judges and justices in partisan elections and participate in nonpartisan judicial retention elections, including three PA Supreme Court seats.

We need to make sure that our communities do not lose hope, and turnout in 2025 for our local, municipal and judicial elections. An independent and fair judiciary is needed now more than ever before in the Commonwealth.

It’s critical that we remain vigilant and work together to protect the future of our democracy.

Native American Heritage Month

The Thanksgiving holidays might be at the top of mind during November for most people, but we want to take this time to amplify the voices and stories of the original inhabitants of the United States and their descendants.

According to the U.S. Census and the PA Department of State, 52% of Indigenous people in Pennsylvania are not registered to vote or are at risk of being dropped from the voter rolls.

Do you know who originally inhabited the land you now occupy?

The map above shows the original borders of the Indigenous people's land before colonization. The stars indicate the location our eight offices.

According to IWPR, Native American women are not expected to reach pay equity with white men until 2144.

A short history on Native American rights:

Voting inequalities for Native Americans still exist nearly a century after Congress granted them citizenship.

This is unacceptable, and a way to fix this is by voicing our vote. Participation in electoral politics can be conflicting for many people, but where history has failed, voting offers a path forward.

NPP IN THE NEWS

In an article titled Will Tim DeFoor's motor voter audit sow mistrust in Pennsylvania elections? from the Philadelphia Inquirer, Avi Steinhardt wrote: "Kadida Kenner, CEO of the New Pennsylvania Project, said that her voting rights organization has worked “tirelessly” to combat GOP challenges."

In an article titled Make a difference: Where to volunteer if you’re unhappy with the presidential outcome from The Keystone, Ashley Adams wrote: "Frustrated with the election results? You can still lend a hand in supporting the issues that matter most to you by volunteering at these organizations... The New Pennsylvania Project is a voting rights organization focused on voter registration, civic education, and mobilization."

Pennsylvania Undated and Wrongly Dated Mail-in Ballots Challenge (RNC)

“The Republican petitioners claim that some counties — including Bucks County, Centre County and Philadelphia — chose to count undated or wrongly dated mail-in ballots in the November 2024 general election. They argue this violates the state Supreme Court’s orders in two related lawsuits, which prohibited the counting of undated or wrongly dated mail-in ballots in the November election.”

Republicans Try to Block Counting of Undated Ballots in Pennsylvania

“On Thursday, the RNC and McCormick filed a lawsuit in Centre County, challenging the Centre County Board of Elections’ decision to count three mail-in ballots submitted with undated or wrongly dated outer envelopes in the general election. The plaintiffs argue that this violates the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision in a similar recent lawsuit, which prohibited undated or wrongly dated ballots from being counted in the general election.”

New York Judge Strikes Down State’s Voting Rights Act

“On Thursday, a New York trial court judge struck down the state’s 2022 Voting Rights Act (NYVRA), which was created to make up for deficiencies in federal law following Congress’s 2021 failure to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act... Citing the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that determined race-based affirmative action in college admissions was unconstitutional, Vazquez-Doles wrote that the NYVRA similarly “provides enhanced rights” to protected classes, in violation of the Constitution. ”

After Court Order, Ohio Attorney General Approves Pro-Voting Amendment Proposal

“Ohio Attorney General David Yost (R) approved the petition summary of the Ohio Voters Bill of Rights, a proposed pro-voting constitutional amendment that would greatly expand ballot access in the Buckeye State.”

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Pennsylvania Department of State Calls for Recount in U.S. Senate Race

“The Pennsylvania Department of State ordered a recount to be conducted in the state’s U.S. Senate race, since the margin is less than 0.5%, triggering an automatic recount. Under Pennsylvania law, if a race qualifies for an automatic recount — and the losing candidate doesn’t waive it — the state must order a recount by 5 p.m. on the second Thursday following Election Day.”

Election Deniers Sweep Local Races Across Battleground States

“Prior to the election, a Democracy Docket investigation exposed hundreds of election deniers on the ballot in seven key states — Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. All of the candidates identified in the investigation were incumbents serving local office in positions like elections commissioners, municipal clerks, board of commissioners members and state lawmakers.”

5 Takeaways From This Year’s State Supreme Court Races

“This year’s general election saw dozens of candidates win seats on state high courts, with Democrats and Republicans securing respective majorities in Michigan and Ohio. One new justice even made history. Although most of the supreme court races weren’t partisan, the two political parties vied for the opportunity to control the court’s ideological balance, which can impact how high courts rule.”

Two Black Women Make History in U.S. Senate, Here’s How They’ll Fight For Democracy

“Though a woman of color will not be heading to the White House this year, history was still made with the election of Angela Alsobrooks (D) in Maryland and Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D) in Delaware – marking the first time ever that two Black women will serve together in the U.S. Senate.”

An Overlooked — and Increasingly Important — Clue to How People Vote

“Latinos, young men, non-college-educated white people, suburban women. The exit polls and political analysis invariably focuses on the changing behavior of demographic groups. That ignores a big determinant of political behavior: where people get their news and information. It’s odd how little attention has been given to this, given that in the past decade we’ve had a revolution in how information flows.”

Trump administration’s mass deportation plan would hurt Pennsylvania, immigrant advocates warn

“President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants would lead to population loss, exacerbate workforce shortages and increase tax burdens for Pennsylvania residents and businesses, the Democratic state lawmakers heard this week.”
