Once again, the House is voting on HR 9495, a bill that threatens free speech and advocacy under the false pretense of fighting terrorism. This dangerous legislation could strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status and shut them down if labeled as “supporting terrorism”—a vague standard that invites abuse and targets dissent.

Since 9/11, ever expanding watch lists have infringed on civil liberties and disproportionately harassed Muslim Americans. Now, Congress is pushing to create yet another watch list that ignores First Amendment protections.

If passed, HR 9495 would:

  1. Abuse of Power: Broad authority to label nonprofits allows the government to punish organizations for ideological reasons, not evidence.
  2. No Due Process: Secret information would be used to target groups, leaving them powerless to defend themselves.
  3. Silenced Advocacy: Fear of being labeled could crush free speech and legitimate activism.

The timing is no coincidence. This bill is a response to pro-Palestinian protests, targeting organizations challenging the status quo. As peaceful protesters face arrest, nonprofits advocating for human rights risk being shut down.

Tell your representative to protect free speech and civil liberties by voting NO on HR 9495.
