Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

I have said it many times: our schools are a bright spot in the story of DC. Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with multiple student groups, at schools and in the community, including today at the University of the District of Columbia [ [link removed] ], and what I know is that our young people are smart, engaged, and tremendous ambassadors of our DC values. I’m grateful for the educators who challenge and love our students; I’m grateful for the community organizations who partner with us to keep students safe and engaged [ [link removed] ]; and I’m grateful for all the partners – in DC Government and in the community – who are working with us to ensure our students are in school every day, on time [ [link removed] ].

With that in mind, I want to invite families to this year’s EdFEST [ [link removed] ], our annual school fair where you can learn about school options for the upcoming year. This year, EdFEST will take place on two dates:

* Grades 9-12 [ [link removed] ]: Saturday, December 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Eastern High School
* PK3–Grade 8 [ [link removed] ]: Saturday, December 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the DC Armory
mkk

At EdFEST, you'll meet representatives from DCPS and public charter schools and have the opportunity to ask questions about school programs, support services, and extracurricular activities so that you can choose the best fit for your child.

Whether you will be new to the school system or just exploring your options, EdFEST is your one-stop shop for making informed decisions about your child's education. So mark your calendars and don't miss out.

Sincerely,

Muriel BowserFacebook Album

Barry Farm–Hillsdale was established in 1867 for formerly enslaved African Americans to own land and create a self-sustaining community after the Civil War. The community was made up of organizations and leaders who advocated for racial and economic justice. This legacy continued with Barry Farm Dwellings, a public housing community constructed in the 1940s. The goal of the latest redevelopment is to return Barry Farm back to its roots of African American ownership and strong community ties.
