Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Returns to Focus on the Family

By: Jim Daly

An Army veteran and former director of the CIA, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is deftly managing a myriad of hot button global issues these days. From the China roots of the coronavirus pandemic to the defense and promotion of religious freedom around the world, the former four-term Kansas representative has his hands very full.

Mr. Pompeo shared with us that the administration is determined to get to the bottom of the origin of the deadly virus. Yes, there is pushback and some debate, but America will lead and do what is right, because that’s who we are as a nation.

You’ll hear him say that despite pockets of darkness around the world, the Lord is at work. Yes, some people are up to no good, but every human being has dignity.

Isn’t it refreshing to hear the Secretary of State invoke God’s sovereignty and place in the world?

Los Angeles County Likely Extending Stay-at-Home Order Until August, Leaving Millions in the Lurch
Los Angeles County Likely Extending Stay-at-Home Order Until August, Leaving Millions in the Lurch
By: Brittany Raymer

Los Angeles residents are fuming after the Public Health Director recommended on Tuesday that the county should extend the stay-at-home order until August, which would potentially leave thousands if not millions unemployed.

In terms of population, Los Angeles is the largest county in the United States with more than 10.1 million people calling it home. In a county Board of Supervisors meeting, Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer stated her belief that the LA county’s stay-at-home order would likely be extended into the next couple of months unless there is a “dramatic change to the virus and tools at hand.”

Gov. Cuomo Backtracks, Reverses Order Forcing Nursing Homes to Take COVID-19 Patients
By: Zachary Mettler

Facing a rising level of backlash, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, has reversed his March 25 directive which ordered nursing homes to accept coronavirus-positive patients from hospitals.

On Sunday May 10, Gov. Cuomo issued a new announcement that hospitals can no longer release coronavirus patients to nursing homes unless the patient first tests negative for the virus, indicating that they have recovered. This is a reversal from the original March 25 order which said nursing homes were “prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident… to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.”

In-Person Worship Services in Kentucky Can Proceed, Federal Appeals Court Rules

Last Saturday, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s attempt to ban in-person worship services in the state, in a case involving Maryville Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. The action came one week after the same 6th Circuit 3-judge panel blocked Beshear’s order as it related to drive-in worship services.

The lawsuit involves two executive orders issued by the governor related to the coronavirus outbreak. The first, dated March 19, prohibited all “mass gatherings” except “normal operations at airports, bus and train stations, . . . shopping malls and centers,” and “typical office environments, factories, or retail or grocery stores where large numbers of people are present, but maintain appropriate social distancing.”

New York Times Editorial Sings the Praises of “Weird Christianity
New York Times Editorial Sings the Praises of “Weird Christianity
By: Glenn Stanton

This past Sunday, the New York Times printed a long editorial by a religion writer on a movement among young people toward what she described as “Weird Christianity.” It’s not quite what you would expect from their pages. It didn’t belittle Christians or characterize them as unsophisticated rubes. Quite different. It explains the rise of more traditional and orthodox faith practices within Christianity among young adults. In fact, it praised this development.

The word “weird” is not employed in a derogatory way, but to colorfully explain that this movement is very much out of the mainstream of what most would assume about young adults today. Growing numbers of 20- and 30-somethings are seeking out and embracing a more liturgical brand of Christianity.
