Senator Mastriano will be participating in a ceremony honoring Pennsylvania WWII veterans sponsored by Wreaths Across America, at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, beginning at noon.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of D Day and Battle of the Bulge.

Senator Mastriano will be presenting medals to Pennsylvania’s surviving WWII veterans commemorating and thanking them for their service. These brave Men & Women rushed into battle so that America could remain the worlds bastion of Freedom and, in this small way, we are recognizing that bravery and sacrifice.

Senator Mastriano joins with Wreaths Across America in their mission to REMEMBER our Fallen Heroes, HONOR those who have served or are serving our Country and TEACH our Children the Value of Freedom.

The theme for this year’s event is Live With A Purpose.

Wreaths Across America will also be honoring these veterans with a citation, coin and blanket which will be presented at the event.

Gold Star families from across the Commonwealth will be in attendance as well.

We’re honored to be invited to speak at the Southern Wesleyan University Veterans event this past week where we shared our early experiences in the Army on the Iron Curtain as well as Desert Storm. The event was attended by hundreds of veterans and students from the school.

** Franklin County Projects Awarded $2 Million in Grants
------------------------------------------------------------

Last week, Senator Mastriano announced $2 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant funding has been awarded to two Franklin County projects.

Learn and Work LLC has been awarded $1 million for its Live and Work at Central redevelopment project ([link removed]) in Chambersburg. The work will transform the former Central High School property into modern, upscale residential units and corporate office space.

“The buildings in which students once learned math, literature, science and history will once again contribute to the future of this community with the completion of the Live and Work at Central redevelopment project,” said Mastriano.

Waynesboro Borough also received a $1 million grant, which will help with the construction costs of a new Waynesboro emergency services complex ([link removed]) .

“This new facility will help meet the emergency service needs of the borough and the surrounding communities,” Mastriano said. “This complex, which will co-locate police, EMS and fire services, will not only ensure the continued availability of critical public health and safety services, but also support the ongoing borough revitalization efforts.”

Pennsylvania’s Office of the Budget administers RACP for acquiring and constructing regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects. RACP projects are authorized in the Redevelopment Assistance section of a Capital Budget Itemization Act, have a regional or multi-jurisdictional impact, and generate substantial increases or maintain current employment levels, tax revenues or other measures of economic activity.

Sen. Doug Mastriano represents the 33rd Senatorial District covering Adams and Franklin counties. He serves as chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee ([link removed]) . He is a combat veteran ([link removed]) who served in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm and was deployed three times to Afghanistan. ** Senate Republicans Organize for 2025-26 Session
------------------------------------------------------------

Voters returned a 28-22 Republican majority ([link removed]) to the state Senate for the 2025-26 legislative session. All Republican incumbents were re-elected and two new Republican senators are on the way to Harrisburg.

To drive priorities of protecting jobs, empowering families and defending freedoms, Senate Republicans re-elected our leadership team ([link removed]) for the upcoming session.

Senate Republicans are united in our efforts to prioritize the needs of Pennsylvanians. We remain focused on helping families restore economic freedom while positioning communities to thrive. Increasing energy independence, expanding access to well-paying jobs and making communities healthy and safer are top initiatives in our work to move Pennsylvania forward.

** Giving First Responders More Support
------------------------------------------------------------

Beginning in December, a law ([link removed]) passed by Senate Republicans will give first responders greater access to workers’ compensation benefits ([link removed]) for a post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI).

Firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians and paramedics will be entitled to benefits for psychological traumas resulting from their employment – even in the absence of physical injuries. To receive benefits, they need to be diagnosed by a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist.

Previously, Pennsylvania law required a first responder to prove there were “objective abnormal working conditions” to establish a PTSI claim. This standard was often difficult to meet.

** Seasonal PennDOT Jobs Open Now
------------------------------------------------------------

PennDOT is hiring individuals for its winter maintenance program that runs until April 2025. The jobs pay from $17.00 to $27.75 an hour and could become a career.

** Being Prepared for Fall Driving Hazards
------------------------------------------------------------

Fall brings different driving hazards, including wet leaves, fog, sun glare and frost. Drivers can use fall driving tips ([link removed]) from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to make their commutes safer.

Extra caution is needed on roads covered with wet leaves, which can be as slippery as ice. When driving in fog, it’s best to use low-beam headlights to avoid the glare created by high beams. Morning frost and icy spots can cause issues as overnight temperatures drop toward freezing. Ice is more likely to form on bridges, overpasses and shaded areas.

Pennsylvania drivers face the third-highest chance of being involved in an animal-related crash in the nation. To report a dead animal for removal from a state road, call the PennDOT at 1-800-FIX-ROAD. Call the Game Commission at 1-833-742-9453 for local roads.
