** The other crisis: 150 attacks on media freedom reported in 50 days
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]

As we mark 50 days since we first started collating attacks on media freedom related to the coronavirus crisis, we’re horrified by the number of attacks we have mapped – over 150 in what is ultimately a short period of time.

We know that in times of crisis media attacks often increase – just look at what happened to journalists after the military coup in Egypt in 2013 and the failed coup against Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey in 2016. The extent of the current attacks, in democratic as well as authoritarian countries, has been a shock.

** Coming soon: Exclusive report on how journalists are being silenced by
vexatious legal threats
------------------------------------------------------------

Later this month, we will publish a detailed new report on the laws being used across Europe to stop investigative journalism being published or broadcast.

This exclusive research will look in detail at which laws are being used to silence the media across the EU, Norway and the UK and will form part of a comprehensive body of research to help journalists fight this insidious threat to their work, and alert the public to what is going on.

** Release Mustafa Gamal
------------------------------------------------------------

Index on Censorship calls for the immediate release of Mustafa Gamal from prison in Egypt. His imprisonment in pre-trial detention is an egregious instance of the Egyptian government’s continuing crackdown on freedom of expression, in violation of international human rights conventions to which Egypt is a signatory. His detention was renewed on 6 May for a further 45 days, in breach of the two-year limit on pre-trial detention.

Read abut Gamal's detention in the open letter we have signed ([link removed]) with other organisations.
