Dear John,
I hope you all had a great week! Good news – following my work with members of both parties, the Social Security Fairness Act has passed the House. This bipartisan bill fixes two provisions that unfairly reduce Social Security benefits for so many public servants – including police officers, firefighters, teachers and federal employees.
More than two million Americans and 16,000 Minnesotans have reduced benefits right now because of the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset – basically, if you paid into Social Security but also earned a public pension from a job not covered by Social Security, your benefits are lowered. For years, I’ve been working to fix this.
This bill has strong support from labor and law enforcement groups and that’s why I worked with both parties to use every legislative option we have to ensure its passage. The Senate now needs to do their part to get the Social Security Fairness Act across the finish line and get folks the benefits they earned.
I’ll keep working to make sure Minnesotans have full access to their earned Social Security benefits.
Here’s what else I was up to this week:
Pushing to stop fentanyl trafficking
This week I renewed my push to get the bipartisan Cooper Davis and Devin Norring Act passed through the House before the end of the 118th Congress. This bill is named after Devin Norring of Hastings, MN, who was just a teenager when he died of fentanyl poisoning after purchasing what he thought was Percocet on Snapchat. On Thursday, his parents, Bridgette and Tom Norring, sat down with me in my D.C. office alongside Tabbatha, who also lost her son to fentanyl. I am grateful for partnerships like these with advocates who are working to get illicit fentanyl out of our communities.
Behind the scenes with Rep. Craig:
This week I got to see a new face in the Capitol – Congresswoman-elect Kelly Morrison from Minnesota’s 3rd Congressional District! Each new incoming class of Members come in for two weeks right after the election as part of freshman orientation. I am excited to spend time with her this week and look forward to working together for Minnesotans in Congress next year.
I hope you all have a greet week!
Until next time,
Angie Craig
Member of Congress
