Friends,
Let’s face it — serving in Congress and running for Senate is kind of an unusual job. You could even call it weird. And all that weirdness would be really tough without a first-class team to do it with.
Thankfully, I have just that. My experience in the CIA and at the Pentagon taught me the importance of building strong, cohesive teams. You want high performance and low drama, well-rounded skills, an unshakeable work ethic, and a commitment to the mission above all. And so I want to give a special thank you to my campaign team, led by my campaign manager, Matt Hennessey.
This group of people is some of the most talented people in Michigan politics. Over the last 19 months since we launched our Senate campaign, they have kept their head down and stayed focused on the mission ahead of them. Our political and operations teams organized public events across Michigan and made sure we were showing up in communities in every corner of the state. My communications team helped tell the story of this campaign. My digital team made sure that we were meeting people where they are online. Our policy shop developed an ambitious Opportunity Agenda for Michigan’s under-represented communities. Our research team made sure everything we put out was fact-checked. Our finance team made sure we had the resources to get all that done, and ably managed our finances so skillfully that we were able to overcome $120 million in outside spending, a record for a Michigan election. And our scheduling and operations team kept all those trains running nonstop.
It was hard and often thankless work. And many of the people who did it are young enough that this dark, divided period in our politics is all they’ve ever known. But they came together to work for something better. I’m so proud of them, and so thankful for their excellence.
