Confirming Gaetz as attorney general would set a dangerous precedent for partisan weaponization of the Justice Department.
John,
Donald Trump announced this week that he is nominating Florida representative and Trump loyalist Matt Gaetz to be attorney general in his new administration.
Confirming Gaetz as attorney general would set a dangerous precedent for partisan weaponization of the Justice Department. It would prevent Trump or his allies from being held accountable on the federal level, which is Trump’s intent, and provide the president with the means to punish his opponents. Further, Gaetz would have the power to roll back crucial civil and voting rights expansions and remove any legal roadblocks that could hinder Trump’s agenda.
As one of Trump’s staunchest supporters, Gaetz has repeatedly attacked the Department of Justice and the FBI for investigating the former president and himself. In February 2024, he introduced a resolution stating that former President Trump “did not engage in insurrection” on January 6, 2021, and he has spread lies regarding the 2020 election and the January 6th insurrection.
Gaetz himself is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over allegations of sexual misconduct, illegal drug use, and accepting improper gifts. He resigned from Congress days before the committee will vote to release its findings, preventing its members from holding Gaetz accountable.
Gaetz’s record shows that he poses a grave threat to the Department of Justice and our country.
