The Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Civil Rights Division in particular, are key components to defending the right to vote in our courts. Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida was nominated by incoming President Trump to be Attorney General, the head of DOJ.

Gaetz, who resigned from Congress upon being nominated, was a four-term Congressman who was investigated by the very department he is supposed to lead for sex trafficking and sexual exploitation of a minor. A House Ethics Committee investigation is still pending, with media reports indicating that a final ruling was close at hand prior to his nomination.

Since the Supreme Court gutted key provisions in the Voting Rights Act, extreme politicians have taken advantage to pass harsh laws that restrict access to the ballot box.
