Happy Thanksgiving
from the Wyoming State Museum & Pecan, the turkey!
There's nothing we're more grateful for at the Wyoming State Museum than YOU!
To our newsletter subscribers, event attendees, class participants, exhibit visitors, volunteers, and supporters—thank you. Museums are places of connection, education, and inspiration, but none of this is possible without the active participation of people like you. A museum is only as strong as the community that supports it, and we're fortunate to have such an engaged and passionate audience.
From all of us at the Wyoming State Museum, we wish you a warm, joyful Thanksgiving filled with gratitude and reflection. We look forward to seeing you soon, whether in person or through the many exciting programs and exhibits still to come.
Thank you for being an essential part of our story,
- The Wyoming State Museum team
Family Day: Space
Saturday, December 7th
10 am - 2 pm
Explore the wonders of space, meet incredible experts, and discover the possibilities of space exploration—while having fun along the way!
You'll talk to an aerospace engineer and lots of other experts from the University of Wyoming. Find hidden planets throughout the galleries, make your own asteroid at our craft station, join a Moon Walk relay race to test your agility in low gravity conditions, look through a Sun telescope from the UW Planetarium, and even make a straw rocket with the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium and see how far you can launch it! Plus enjoy a museum education program about moon phases and other activities led by the Science Initiative Roadshow, Cheyenne Animal Shelter, and the UW College of Engineering.
 New Exhibit!
Wyoming State Parks Artist in Residence
November 7 - December 31
This year’s Wyoming State Parks Artist in Residence Show is now open through December 31st!
This exhibit highlights the works created by Bailey Russel during his 10-day road trip across Wyoming. It showcases works created by Russel during the residency and highlights the creative process while working ‘on the road.’
A reception will be held at the Museum on December 6th from 4 - 6 pm. Works are available for purchase and will benefit State Parks.
This program is a collaboration between Wyoming State Parks, Wyoming Arts Council, and the Wyoming State Museum.
Call for local artists
Enter to create the artwork for Cheyenne's 2025 DÃa de los Muertos Celebrations
Submissions due January 1, 2025
With this year's DÃa de los Muertos events behind us, it's time to start preparing for 2025!
Thanks to support from the Wyoming Arts Council, we are initiating a CALL FOR LOCAL ARTISTS to create original artwork for our 2025 community DÃa de los Muertos celebrations. Submissions are due on January 1, and the winner will receive a $2000 award to complete a finished product in partnership with our DÃa de los Muertos committee.Â
These events seek to share the cultural significance of this holiday and provide welcoming spaces for people to celebrate publicly. We are working to increase the authenticity and educational value of the events. The first major step is inviting local artists to create authentic artwork that our organizations will use for event posters, social media ads, and other promotional materials.
Sponsor Spotlight
Wyoming Wildlife Foundation
At the Wyoming State Museum, we are fortunate to have a lasting and impactful partnership with the Wyoming Wildlife Foundation, a dedicated nonprofit organization that administers funds and makes grants benefitting Wyoming’s incredible habitats and wildlife. Through their work, they aim to create an enduring natural legacy for future generations through stewardship of Wyoming’s wildlife.Â
In 2021, the Wyoming Wildlife Foundation sponsored the creation of our Wildlife Conservation Trunks, which have become an essential part of the Wyoming State Museum’s education offerings. These original trunks, designed for junior high and high school students, offer a hands-on exploration of human impacts on wildlife in Wyoming and across the globe! They contain a collection of fascinating biofacts, such as animal skulls, pelts, and other items from endangered species, alongside world-class curricula that bring the story of wildlife conservation to life in the classroom.
Over the last couple of years, these trunks have helped the museum notice a new need within Wyoming; early-elementary level classrooms need education trunks that focus on what they are learning in their classrooms, too! Thanks to another round of funding from the Wyoming Wildlife Foundation, we are currently working on three new trunks that will focus on three different habitats within Wyoming and fit perfectly with what Wyoming's elementary school students are learning about. Just like the Wildlife Conservation trunks, they'll include skulls and pelts that students can touch and learn about.
We are grateful for the Wyoming Wildlife Foundation's continued commitment to supporting wildlife education in Wyoming. Their sponsorship makes it possible for us to reach more students, ignite their passion for conservation, and inspire a lifelong love of learning. We look forward to continuing our work together to educate and inspire the next generation of conservationists.
