Hi John,

At the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, we believe that the most impactful innovations in education are born from the insights and experiences of those closest to students — educators.

Recently, I had the privilege of visiting Dale Junior High School in Anaheim, California, where I was inspired by how educators are co-designing AI-powered innovations with researchers and developers to create more tailored and engaging learning experiences for students. During the visit, I had the opportunity to meet with Carlos, a Dale Junior High School graduate, and see how his passion and creativity were channeled into a video project about the American Revolution that was created with AI tools. I also heard from educators like Tyler Sherman, who helped develop AI tools to better support his students and ensure they thrive.

Mr. Sherman shared, "We are approaching AI to help personalize education to create learning experiences in the classroom, which is actually humanizing this and building those 21st-century skills…we’re trying to create meaningful experiences to prepare them for life after high school, to prepare them for work, to help them find their purpose and identity."

Under the leadership of Anaheim Union High School District Superintendent Michael Matsuda, teachers in the district like Rob Gaudette are using AI-driven tools to not only streamline routine tasks but also to gain real-time insights into students’ progress and provide timely support to students on their projects. The tools also help teachers design projects aligned with the district’s priorities for teaching and learning.

This visit reinforced the transformative potential of AI in education when it’s co-built with teachers and school leaders. During my time at the school, we announced three new grants ([link removed] ) to Education First, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and Leanlab Education, aimed at helping more educators play an active role in the development of AI products and resources.

As we continue this journey together, I remain inspired by the incredible work happening in classrooms across the country. Your hard work and keen insights are driving real change, and I’m excited about the possibilities ahead as we work with educators and researchers to unlock the full potential of every student.

Sincerely,

Sandra Liu Huang

Head of Education
