Why this matters
Abortion in England and Wales is still a criminal offence. Under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, any woman who undergoes an abortion without the permission of two doctors – for example by ordering pills online – can be prosecuted and receive a life sentence as her abortion takes place outside of the provisions of the Act.
Since 2022, 6 women in England have appeared in court charged with ending or attempting to end their own pregnancy outside abortion law.
Our ongoing #TimeToAct campaign has made significant strides, but this petition represents a pivotal moment. If it receives 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for a debate in Parliament. This debate could be the spark we need to propel our cause forward, raising much-needed awareness and prompting action among both the public and politicians.
Current status
The petition currently has just over 2,200 signatures and is open until 25 May 2025. We have a significant challenge ahead of us to reach the 100,000 signature threshold, but with your help, we can achieve this goal.
