Some of Donald Trump’s new cabinet nominees have been announced – and they’re as extreme as we feared. Each choice represents a step backward, a calculated attempt to dismantle the rights and protections we hold dear. These are extremists dedicated to pushing the most dangerous corners of Trump’s agenda.
With your support, we can mount strong challenges to each of these nominees, but it will take our collective action to make sure they don’t succeed in unraveling our progress.
Here’s a closer look at who Trump wants in power and the threats they pose:
- Matt Gaetz, Attorney General: Ethically challenged, virulently anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ, known for his attempts to undermine justice, and shield political allies, Gaetz’s appointment would put the integrity of the Department of Justice at risk, where he would no doubt weaponize it into a tool for suppressing dissent and promoting partisan attacks.
- Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health & Human Services: Notorious anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist and Trump supporter RFK Jr. has been nominated to lead the federal agency tasked with overseeing the nation's food safety and health. It’s a move that has alarmed public health and safety experts and could jeopardize our ability to quickly respond to future public health threats.
- Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense: A Wall Street banker turned combat veteran turned FOX News commentator, Hegseth would bring extreme ideologies to the Pentagon – including his out-of-touch views claiming that women and transgender troops shouldn’t be allowed to serve, compromising military integrity and readiness. Hegseth also successfully lobbied Trump during his first term to pardon servicemembers accused of war crimes.
- Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security: Lacking any real qualifications (aside from her blind loyalty to Trump), Noem is known for her strong anti-immigrant views and would be tasked with carrying out Trump’s extreme immigration plans which have included threats of immigrant detention camps and mass deportations.
- John Ratcliffe, Director of the CIA: Ater facing bipartisan rejection for the role of Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s first term, Ratcliffe’s history of downplaying foreign interference and promoting conspiracy theories could endanger U.S. intelligence. With him at the CIA, we face the prospect of compromised national security and politicized intelligence gathering.
- Lee Zeldin, EPA Chief: Zeldin’s opposition to environmental protections would devastate the Environmental Protection Agency. His leadership would likely roll back critical protections, accelerating pollution and endangering public health.
Each of these choices could bring serious consequences, not only weakening the agencies they lead but also advancing Trump’s regressive and dangerous vision for America. We must come together to block these nominations and protect the rights and freedoms at stake.
