Dawud was just like any other child. He loved to laugh, play and spend time with his family. But his life was upended by a missile strike near his home in Gaza. His mother Reem frantically searched through the rubble, screaming for someone to help find her son. When Dawud was finally pulled from the destruction, he was alive but severely injured, with a deep leg wound and fractured femur that required immediate attention.
Dawud needed emergency surgery, but the hospitals in Gaza were overwhelmed. There weren’t enough beds and he couldn’t stay. He had to undergo surgery with a lack of everything – of rooms, beds, and even doctors. The procedure was enough to save Dawud’s leg, but he needed more help than the hospital in Gaza could provide.
Fortunately, Dawud was transferred to a hospital in Egypt. There, he received the specialized treatment he desperately needed, thanks to support of Americares and our partners on the ground. Dawud received more surgery, physical therapy and mental health support. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of supporters like you.
As we look to the next 45 years, we think about children, like Dawud, who will need our support in the future – which is why it's crucial that we’re prepared for any and all disasters, wherever and whenever they may strike next.
