President's Message

American Education Week, established by the National Education Association in 1921, is celebrated annually the week before Thanksgiving to honor the vital role of education and those who contribute to creating safe, just, and equitable schools, including our dedicated school health professionals!

November 20 is Education Support Professionals (ESPs) Day, a time to honor and advocate for the essential ESPs who tirelessly ensure that students are safe, healthy, and prepared to learn.

School nurses play an instrumental role in schools by promoting individual and population-based student health, providing vital care coordination, advocating for quality student-centered care, and advancing academic success. Students must be healthy and safe to be ready to learn. The National School Nurse Workforce Study 2.0 conveys a significant and necessary update on the state of the school nursing workforce, providing valuable insights into their roles, challenges, and contributions within the educational setting.

Sheila Caldwell, BSN, RN, CSN, FNASN, and NASN SchoolNurseNet All Member/School Nurse-Open Forum Community Administrator, has been awarded the American School Health Association’s (ASHA) School Health Professional of the Year Award. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify the “whole school, whole community, whole child” approach in K-12 educational settings.

“The role of school nurses is increasingly complex, but the ability to improve the lives of the children, families, and those in the community we serve is enormously rewarding,” Caldwell said. “Over time, I have realized that sharing my knowledge and experiences with others is my ministry. That will be part of my legacy and impact individuals I may never know.”
