# [#]Aloha,
Governor Josh Green announced this week that he will continue to work to reduce spending, by eliminating some state government positions that have been vacant since July 1, 2020 — without cutting any services to our communities.
“We will keep cutting unnecessary spending as we implement the biggest tax cut for Hawaii families in our state’s history, all without reducing needed services,” Governor Green said. “The new tax law we passed earlier this year will reduce the tax burden for a median-income Hawaii family by a total of nearly $20,000 over the next seven years.”

In addition to the historic tax cut, Governor Green has also made greater investments in key priority areas for Hawaii — expanding services for mental health, healthcare loan repayment programs, homelessness, and affordable housing.
“Our goal is to reduce the cost of living in Hawaii for our residents,” Josh said, “so families can afford to live here and our next generation can have a future here.”
The governor used his line-item veto power to cut $500 million in unnecessary spending from the budget this year and $1 billion last year — all without cutting needed services.
The Green administration anticipates billion-dollar budget surpluses for at least the next four years, and projects that state general fund spending will decrease in each of the next three years.
“We have been through enormous challenges over the past few years, including COVID and the devastating fires on Maui,” Josh said, “but we have come through it together — and now we are putting our fiscal house in order, cutting unnecessary spending, and passing along the savings to taxpayers.”
