2024 Q3 HMI Report Shows Continued Negative Sentiment from Homebuilders
CHBA National
The third quarter 2024 HMI results from CHBA National remained overtly pessimistic about new home sales. The single-family HMI was 27.4 this past quarter, down 2.5 points from the second quarter and marginally above the index's all-time low recorded in Q4 2023. The multi-family HMI was 28.5, a drop of 4 points from the previous quarter.
To interpret these results, the further the index falls below the neutral value of 50, the more downbeat the balance of builder sentiment is (an upbeat sentiment balance would be represented by index values further above 50). With the extended period of low builder confidence, downward pressure on housing starts slated for ownership will continue in the quarters and years ahead.
