** Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association issues statement on Governor's budget proposal
------------------------------------------------------------
Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association President Jon Coupal issued the following statement today:
“Because of the pandemic, California confronts a challenging budget shortfall. As Governor Newsom acknowledged, Californians deserve a leaner government. Taxpayers can also take comfort in that there are no immediate plans for broad-based tax increases. However, reliance on a federal bailout package for state and local governments is unrealistic. Governor Newsom and the California Legislature must be prepared to make even more substantial reductions in state spending. They must also keep in mind that California’s budget has grown much faster than population and inflation in the last decade. The fastest way to close the budget shortfall would be with a rapid recovery in the California economy. Broad-based regulatory reform and tort reform could go far to incentivize the private sector.”
