Last Week’s Election Included Help for Working People

CLASP responded to the election of Donald Trump with a statement about the threats for immigrant communities, people of color, women, and LGBTQ Americans—along with workers and people with low incomes, core public programs, and the capacity of public officials to do their jobs honestly, fairly, and without fear. As we said in our statement, we are prepared for this moment and inspired by the partners who share this work with us.

We are also inspired by the success of several state ballot measures that will ensure workers have access to paid sick time and higher minimum wages. You can learn more about these gains here.

Mass Deportation: Unjust and Harmful to the Nation

Wendy Cervantes, director of CLASP’s Immigration and Immigrant Families team, was featured on an episode of the National Association of Social Workers' podcast, NASW Social Work Talks. She discussed what mass deportation would look like under a Trump Administration and why such policies are harmful to children and families.

CLASP submitted a public comment in support of Louisiana’s waiver request to offer Medicaid-covered services to individuals 90 days prior to their release from incarceration. We applauded the waiver’s relatively broad eligibility criteria and use of the maximum pre-release eligibility period allowed by federal rules. However, we also expressed concern over certain aspects of Louisiana’s implementation plan and recommended areas for improvement before approving the state’s waiver request.
