John,
Finding a job, stable housing, or opportunities for education are some of the best ways to ensure success after incarceration. So why are these “re-building” blocks often out of reach for those Americans who have a record?
For many, getting in the door feels like an impossibility. Job, school and housing applications, among others, include prying questions about past convictions, which often immediately exclude the applicant from acceptance. These institutional background checks work to pigeonhole and stigmatize people who have otherwise distanced themselves from their past as they rebuild their lives. Yet, instead of giving them a chance at redemption, the current system is more likely to keep them in a cycle of poverty and incarceration by making it harder to gain access to vital services and opportunities due to a past mistake. That is why we at Dream.Org are working with a coalition of organizations and stakeholders to pass clean slate legislation in Kentucky. And we need your support.
