Senator John Thune (R-SD) was elected by secret ballot yesterday to replace Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as the next Senate Republican Leader. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), the conservative choice, was eliminated on the first ballot, and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) was narrowly defeated on the second ballot by a 29-24 vote.
