​​​For more than a decade, the European Union’s reputation as a beacon of freedom and democracy has been flagging. Facing mounting social, economic, and security pressures, EU leaders and member states are turning to short-sighted solutions to secure their long-term futures.

Unfortunately, in areas ranging from migration and asylum policy to resource extraction and energy security, the EU is increasingly outsourcing its responsibilities to partners that demonstrate less respect for fundamental freedoms. 

Celebrating Our First Collective-Bargaining Agreement

Freedom House is proud to affirm its support for the important role of labor unions in democracy. The organization and its staff union have signed and ratified their first collective-bargaining agreement after a year and a half of negotiations. The three-year contract took effect on November 1.

We Stand with Turkish Journalists

Journalists in Turkey who report on the judiciary are increasingly being detained. We call for the immediate release of Furkan Karabay, the latest journalist arrested, recognizing that his detention is an unjust infringement on press freedom and freedom of expression.
