John, we know that living with diabetes can come with comments and observations from friends, colleagues or even strangers. This can make life with a complex condition feel even harder so, this World Diabetes Day, we’re asking you to join us in tackling diabetes-related stigma - are you in?

I'm in!

Nobody sees it. The middle of the night jelly babies to treat your hypo. The stress of doing the weekly food shop. The raised eyebrows when your tech beeps in the office. The fact they weren’t the first person this week to ask, ‘are you sure you should be eating that?’ or suggest diabetes is somehow because of something you did. The mental maths of carb counting. ‘Making the joke’ before anyone else does, to get it out of the way.

If people knew how their comments made you feel or how important it is to see the ‘you’ beyond your diabetes, it could make a huge difference.

We can’t do this without you, John. Whether you've got a personal story to tell, you want to hear from others who may be feeling the same, or you want to be part of the fight against stigma - we want to hear from you.

How we're tackling stigma

As we continue to listen to and work with people living with diabetes, we’re also investing in research to understand exactly why diabetes develops in different people and we’re still trying to understand stigma and how we can address it. We’re currently funding two research proposals that will help us better understand the stigma experienced by people with diabetes and identify strategies to reduce or diabetes stigma.

We're here for you

You don't always have to put on a brave face. Talk to people who just get it, and know where you can get the right information and support about diabetes - for you or for others. We’ve put together just some of the ways we’re here for you if you need us - providing a space for you to share experiences with other people with diabetes, or getting trusted, expert advice - you don’t have to go through this alone.
