Dear Colleague,
In a time of division and change, the AAUP is holding to our fundamental values. We stand for academic freedom, free inquiry, and education as a common good. Our vision is of a fully funded system of higher education—where students don’t accumulate debt, workers are treated with dignity, and our universities are engines of social mobility, progress, democracy, and innovation.
Stand with us.
In the years to come, we'll continue to work toward this vision, by organizing and building power together with our colleagues, our students, and our communities—on our campuses and nationally. We will unify higher education workers across all ranks, alongside students and communities. We will fight for our values and our vision, and stand up to anyone who attempts to attack higher education, our campuses, or our communities.
We know that these attempts will gain momentum under another Trump administration. He and his allies explicitly disparage higher education and embrace goals that include limits on teaching and learning based on partisanship rather than scholarship and expertise, dismantling tenure and teachers’ unions, and increased barriers to access for students. Trump has made it clear that he wants to end higher education as a common good.
Help us protect higher education. Join or rejoin the AAUP today.
Here's some of the work we're focused on in the months ahead.
-
Our Skills to Win organizing training program for members. Based on Jane McAlevey’s organizing model, it focuses on practical skills to build high-participation chapters and win campaigns. Sessions are starting this weekend and more will be held in early 2025.
We’re developing strategies to build power, strengthen alliances, and address the threats ahead. We will be hosting an all-AAUP member meeting at 7 p.m. ET. on December 12.
The AAUP has a long tradition of organizing, defending academic freedom, fighting for shared governance, and working together to protect higher education as a common good. And our collective power is needed more now than ever. Join or rejoin today.
In solidarity,
Todd Wolfson, AAUP President
