With there being a chance of a Republican trifecta in Washington, protecting reproductive rights could not be more dire. That is why we have turned our sites to a very critical goal: To enshrine abortion rights in the Virginia constitution.

Passing a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive rights in Virginia is essential to safeguarding the fundamental right to abortion access for future generations. Without this protection, reproductive rights remain vulnerable to shifting political landscapes and the whims of elected officials who could impose restrictions or outright bans on abortion.

And this fight is already underway: TODAY, the Virginia House Privileges and Elections Committee will meet to vote on the Reproductive Freedom Constitutional Amendment.

This is just the first step in what will be a long fight to get this amendment on the ballot. Once it passes the committee, it will go to the full floor of the Virginia House in January for a vote and will need a simple majority in each chamber to pass in 2025.

A constitutional amendment offers the strongest, most permanent protection against efforts to erode or eliminate abortion rights in Virginia. As we’ve seen in other states, when these rights are left unprotected, they can be quickly dismantled through legislation, court rulings, or executive actions.
