Over the past weeks, I’ve written about Veterans Day activities, Voting, and Halloween. This week, I will recognize those being inducted into the 5th Northville Athletic Hall of Fame Class. The “Hall” honors Northville’s top student-athletes, coaches, administrators & teams who have:
* MADE A POSITIVE IMPACT on the local community
* EARNED SUCCESS on and off the field
* SERVED AS ROLE MODELS for today’s student-athletes
Before looking at the Northville Hall of Fame, let's see what's going on in "The Ville" today:

* Riverwalk – Retention pond at Downs dug & Riverbed being built with rocks & timbers.
* Downs Initiative – Streets/Curbs poured in sections and building permits issued.

Let's take a look at the new Inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame:
* Jack Crawford: Lifetime Achievement Award 2005-2023 – Clock operator and announcer for Northville & Novi Teams including: football, basketball, softball, volleyball, hockey, wrestling, track & field, cheerleading, and field hockey.
* Linda Jones: 2009-2019 – Tennis Coach (JV ‘09-‘12, Varsity ‘13-‘19) Won all KLAA and regional tournaments, was State Champion and Runner-up. Awarded “Regional Coach of the Year” three times, had 13 state champions & many All-State Academic Student Athletes.
* Matt Williams: 2001-2005, Football & Baseball – Football ‘01-‘03, Baseball ‘02- ‘05 (two-time captain) Honors: All-State, All-Conference, All-Area & Louisville Slugger All-American. Batting avg. 462 in ’05, Duke College Athlete 4 yrs, Drafted by Chicago Cubs, John Bench Award finalist.
* Rickey Torrence: 1994-1998, Wrestling – Honors: All-State, All-Region, All-District, All-League. In 1998, undefeated personal record (45-0). AAU Jr. Olympics Silver Medalist & “Coach of the Year” in Maryland where he started 3 high school wrestling programs.
* Steve Evans: 1962-1966, Football/Basketball/Baseball – National Champion (Amateur Baseball Federation), Honors: All-Leage in Baseball, Basketball and Football. Pitched for University of Michigan, Drafted by St. Lous Cardinals and played 6 seasons. Retired 1973.
* Sarah Stern: 2005-2008, Soccer & Basketball – Athlete of the Year 2007-2008, Varsity Soccer 3 yrs, Basketball 4 yrs. Honors: Basketball - All-State, All-Area & in Soccer - All-State scoring 52 goals / 41 assists. MSU Student Athlete Soccer (Big Ten Scholar award recipient).
* Deb Stevens: 1987-1989, Basketball/Volleyball/Soccer – ‘89 Athlete of the Year, Honors in Basketball; Record holder in points/rebounds, MVP, All-Area. Volleyball - MVP, All-Conference, All-Area. Soccer - MVP. College scholarships all three sports… MSU Student athlete (Basketball).
* 2014 Girls Soccer Team – Perfect Season, 23-0, National Champs (Student Sport Elite Soccer). TEAM scored 80 goals vs. 5 allowed in 23 games and had 18 shut-outs. Top All-Academic Team in KLAA with 18 of 21 scholar athletes on list along with 7 MHSSCA Scholar athletes – additionally, this TEAM had 8 Student Athletes compete in college athletics.
As the Mayor of Northville, I congratulate all the Athletes, as well as their families & friends, for being part of this year’s class for the Northville Athletic Hall of Fame. Know that I speak for all Northvillians when I say, “We appreciate all that they’ve meant to our town … this Hamlet in the Hills, this Switzerland of the County that we call Northville.”
I would also like to thank all the Coaches, High School Athletic Staff, and the Hall of Fame Directors for establishing this institution commemorating Northville’s exceptional student-athletes. We honor and recognize each of them for their pursuit of sports excellence and representing Northville as ambassadors of goodwill.
