I care deeply about the world my kids grow up in. That’s one of the main
reasons I ran for office in the first place, as a political newcomer in
2017.

Being a parent means helping my kids understand what’s happening in our
country, including what Trump’s win means for their future and the future
of the people they care about.

On Election Night, I went to pick up my daughter Betsy from water polo
practice. She got in the car, and she was crying. At first, I thought
maybe the coach yelled at her (not uncommon) or that someone hit her
(water polo does get physical). I asked her, “Honey, what’s wrong?”

Tears continued to fall down her face, and she sniffled. “Mom, Trump’s
going to win,” she said to me. “What if I get raped and I need to have an
abortion?”

Betsy is twelve. That’s something no twelve-year-old should have to worry
about.

I leaned over and gave her a big hug, and I reassured her, “Don’t worry.
Mom is a fighter, and I am not going to let anything bad happen to you.”

It was heartbreaking for me to have that conversation with my daughter. It
also reminded me how scary this time is for people and why we can’t give
up. Democrats need to be ready, and we need to have strategies on both the
state and federal levels to protect people’s fundamental freedoms.

I know that many of us are tired after fighting so hard for the past few
months and years for the future of this country. It’s hard to think about
soldiering on.

But, I am not giving up—for Betsy and for the millions of girls growing up
with fewer rights than their mothers. I hope you’ll join me.
