ACLU Supporter, the House is voting today on a bill that would give the incoming Trump administration a new tool to stifle free speech, target political opponents, and punish groups that disagree with them. It's an open invitation for abuse – tell your representatives to vote NO on this bill today.
The bill, H.R. 9495, would allow Donald Trump and his handpicked Secretary of Treasury to unilaterally designate nonprofits and other tax-exempt organizations they don't like – like news outlets and universities – as "terrorist supporting" and effectively dismantle them based on this sole accusation of wrongdoing. To be clear: It's already a federal crime to provide material support to terrorist organizations. And the supposed "safeguards" are a façade of due process, providing no practical protection against a president intent on exploiting this authority to silence his critics and stifle dissent. Congress should not be giving presidents new ways to expand their power at the expense of our freedoms. Our representatives need to hear from as many of us as possible before they vote tonight: Tell your reps to vote no on H.R. 9495 now. Thanks for taking action, The ACLU Team |
