John,

This past weekend there was a tragic shooting at Tuskegee University that
injured sixteen people and killed one person. 

This should’ve been a joyful day celebrating the 100th homecoming week at
a storied HBCU (Historically Black College and University). Instead, a
tragedy unfolded due to the lack of gun safety legislation that we KNOW
works. 

Until our leaders address gun violence in a meaningful way, senseless and
preventable tragedies like this will continue to happen. 

The students and community of Tuskegee University deserve better. Young
people deserve better.

The fact that this happened at a historically Black University when gun
violence already disproportionately affects Black people in the United
States should make us all upset enough to take action. 

This is our reality, but it doesn’t have to be this way. We honor the
lives of those who were injured, the life that was lost, and the community
that was changed by striving for a better future where this will never
happen again.
