That's a question that deserves a good answer. We deserve a party that truly represents the will of the people. When citizens overwhelmingly want a ceasefire, an arms embargo, universal health care, a living wage and so much more, why doesn't it happen?
The answer shouldn't surprise you. The Democrats and Republicans drastically tilt the playing field. They've effectively closed the door and refused to give voters a real choice!
Established parties have a clear advantage with a relatively low signature requirement and the deep pockets of their wealthy donors to ensure they're on the ballot. Anyone who rejects the system of legalized bribery needs nearly 10 times that and will face challenges to those signatures so in reality it's at least 40 times higher than either red or blue. Then, even if a candidate jumps these hurdles, establishment lawyers sue them off the ballot like what happened to Jill Stein in Nevada. But wait there's more…
What are we demanding?
Ballot fairness and equal signature requirements in Illinois!! And here's the more… an end to deceiving the public by naming a bill one thing and writing it about something else entirely! It's like they're hiding the real legislation behind a fake title.Maybe this is standard practice but doesn't it seem wrong?
What's this about?
The Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Act was gutted! They eviscerated the original bill and stuffed it with language regarding election requirements. The petitioning period for new political parties and independent candidates who want to run for election in Illinois is already way too short at just 90 days! This HB4488 bill signed by Governor Pritzker was intended to shorten it to just 60 days. We believe Amendment 5 might be their attempt to walk it back. And it has nothing to do with Crohn´s disease or Colitis Awareness!! How can we even begin to address our concerns if we don't have fair access to the ballot and full transparency of legislative actions?
What can I do?
CALL OR WRITE your state senator and your state representative today! Tell them you want equal signature requirements and a longer petitioning period for new political parties and independent candidates. Tell them the bill is not fair and that they need to write something new! We deserve better and the ballot should reflect ALL the choices available for our representation. Don't wait, their session ends in just two weeks on November 21. Stand up for fairness, stand up for democracy! And most of all, thank you for joining the fight!!
