Dear friends,
I had planned to write you with an update on our fight to keep 2,000 families from homelessness.
But then the election results came in. Two men were elected who have insulted or threatened almost every member of our Children’s Law Center community.
I feel compelled to say something that shouldn’t need to be said. Children’s Law Center has been and will continue to be strong because of the diversity of our staff, clients, donors, volunteers and allies: a community that includes immigrants and US-born citizens, people of all races, creeds and religions, LGBTQ+ people and straight allies, people with disabilities and those without, birth parents, grandparents, stepparents, teens, children, families living in poverty and families with financial wealth. People who have been marginalized and people with privilege.
Much about the future is uncertain. But this I know:
You have stood up for us, and we will always stand with you.
We can disagree about what government policies are most effective. But we will never compromise on the dignity and worth of every member of our community.
The work just got harder, especially as our local laws face a potential onslaught of federal challenges.
But there are still 2,000 DC families facing imminent homelessness. And together, we are still fighting for them – and for our vision of a world in which all children have a strong foundation of family, health and education and live free from the burdens of poverty, trauma, racism and other oppression.
With gratitude,
