Trudging through rain and snow. Talking with people who are apathetic or slightly hostile. Spending a beautiful Michigan Saturday knocking doors when you could be on a boat, or in the woods, or on the couch watching football.

It takes a lot to be a campaign volunteer. It ain’t easy. But if you’re looking for a reason that our country is headed for something better, a reason to feel hopeful despite our bitter and angry politics, check this out:

More than 50,000 Michiganders volunteered to help my campaign and Democrats up and down the ballot. They knocked on more than 2.2 million doors, sent more than 1.1 million texts, and made more than 5 million phone calls to voters. What did they get for all those efforts? Fame and fortune? Well, no. Maybe a doughnut and a cup of coffee – and a huge thank you from me.

From the first days of my first congressional campaign, some of the most thoughtful, decent, dedicated and patriotic people I’ve met have been campaign volunteers. Before anybody else thought I had a shot to win, they believed, and they were willing to put their shoe leather on the line. From our first “Snow Boots on the Ground” back in early 2018 to the final, massive, statewide effort to get out the vote in this Senate race, all my campaigns have been within the “margin of effort.” I would not be headed to the U.S. Senate without public-spirited Americans willing to sacrifice their time and effort. Thank you for each and every phone shift, door knock, and for the countless times you lifted me up with your smiles, your determination, and your belief in something better.
