John, Congress is back in session
today, and one of their first acts will be to vote on an incredibly
dangerous bill: H.R. 9495 the so-called “Stop Terror-Financing and Tax
Penalties on American Hostages Act.”

This bill should be a five-alarm fire for anyone who seeks to protect free
speech, civil society, and democracy from the incoming Trump White House.

H.R. 9495 would grant the incoming Trump administration unprecedented and
unchecked power to shut down any nonprofit organization — including social
justice groups, media organizations, universities, and civil liberties
organizations — based on a unilateral accusation of wrongdoing and without
due process.

A version of this bill already passed the House and then stalled in the
Senate last spring. Now, the House has attached it to another unrelated
bill and is looking to vote on it as soon as TODAY.

[ [link removed] ]The Intercept: Congress is about to gift Trump sweeping powers to crush
his political enemies. The House is set to vote Tuesday on a bill that
would let the administration destroy nonprofits it claims support
terrorism.

This legislation is part of a broader far-right assault on democracy and
the right to protest, aimed at outlawing the social justice movements
fighting for progressive change—particularly the pro-Palestinian movement.

These MAGA forces often start by attacking Palestinian rights groups and
then use this as a tool to openly attack groups pushing for racial
justice, LGTBTQ+ rights, immigrant rights, and environmental justice by
labeling activists as “terrorists.”

If this bill passes both chambers of Congress, Trump’s Treasury Secretary
would be able to strip nonprofit status from organizations it doesn't like
— without due process. Imagine how this could be used to crush our
progressive movement.

cannot let this bill become law.
