We are excited to announce that Dr. john a. powell, Director of the Othering and Belonging Institute, will be our keynote speaker on Thursday, December 5, during the morning plenary at Race and Power! Thursday’s day-long theme is centered around one of the key words in our Summit theme—Resistance to the evils of racism, authoritarianism, and White Christian Nationalism—in our fight to secure the Beloved Community. The morning plenary includes an introduction to the Wall of Resistance History, a panel of leaders and partners, and—of course—our keynote speaker.
Dr. powell (who spells his name in lowercase in the belief that we should be "part of the universe, not over it, as capitals signify") is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties, structural racism, housing, poverty, and democracy. As Director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, a research institute, he and his team bring together scholars, community advocates, communicators, and policymakers to identify and eliminate the barriers to an inclusive, just, and sustainable society and to create transformative change toward a more equitable world.
Dr. powell has been a long-time partner of Gamaliel. He was a keynote speaker at our first Race and Power in America Summit in Detroit in June 2015. We are pleased to welcome him back in this space.
If you haven’t registered yet for our 5th Biennial Race and Power in America Summit, do it now. The deadline to register—November 15—is just 3 days away!
In solidarity,
Ana Garcia-Ashley, Executive Director
