COPE Digest
November 2024
Authoring retraction notices

Welcome to the November issue of COPE Digest

With just a few days until Publication Integrity Week we're happy to report that we've had a great response from members and from the wider community. Some sessions are almost full and we are closing registration to these as they reach capacity. Register today to secure those final places.

Our other big piece of news is that we will soon launch a new website. It should be a better experience for you and a solid foundation for some exciting new features to come.

Benefits of the new website are improved search and filtering, optimisation for different screen sizes, better accessibility, and a refreshed design making the most of COPE’s rich resources. It will also bring more discussions on to the website so you can take part in the conversation whatever the time of day.

To access some guidance and resources you will need to be logged in to the website. To make sure your first visit is a smooth experience we recommend that you check your login details. Please log in now to make sure your details are up to date.

AUTHORING RETRACTION NOTICES

Who should be the author of a retraction notice and what should they include in the notice?

The COPE position gives more details on what should be included and what could be considered for inclusion.

PUBLICATION INTEGRITY WEEK
18-22 November 2024

LIMITED SPACES LEFT!

With just a few days until Publication Integrity Week we're excited to say we've had a great response to the event. Register today for the sessions you would like to attend.

Plagiarism Monday
We are facing new challenges and ways of thinking about plagiarism. Detection tools are growing more sophisticated but so are ways to evade them. Hear leading scholars in the field put forward their views on these topics, from who ‘owns’ knowledge, to new ways of uncovering misconduct, and how to interpret them.
  • Working together Tuesday
This day has a special focus on journals, publishers, and university and research institutes working together to solve publication integrity issues. This day is fully booked!

  • The future of publication ethics Wednesday
Across three different panels we will hear from experts on how we can use AI to detect ethical issues, how ethics can be applied to publications beyond books and journals, and how peer review is changing in the modern age.

  • Paper mills Thursday
There are spaces available at the workshop on handling cases of suspected paper mill activity (for COPE Members only).
The other paper mill sessions, United2Act insights and Authorship for sale, are fully booked!
Dealing with data Friday
We spotlight emerging topics for those dealing with data: how diversity and inclusivity can refocus data on its subjects, potentially bringing better outcomes in healthcare and policy; considerations when publishing studies based on qualitative data; and how organisations handle, secure, and share data responsibly.

Registration is open until 14 November
