Dear John,

Well, here we are enjoying our week-long meditation challenge. I’ll bet you’ll look back on this time as very influential in your life. Especially as you continue to develop your regular practice.

I can share that I’ve been doing my morning practice, Sadhana, for over 4 decades now. That’s 43 years. Wow!!

One thing I’ve observed recently is that people are looking pretty drawn. I totally understand. The recent election cycle – regardless of where you landed – has been exhausting, anxiety-provoking, and basically hard for many people.

I’m not just saying it either. A number of medical articles have come out detailing the effects of election stress on our body, mind, and spirit.

So it’s great that we’re all taking this opportunity to meditate together. Because remember, meditating in a group, even virtually, magnifies the benefits. If you haven’t registered yet, you can still join us at absolutely no charge!

Now here’s the main reason for this communication:

Many people wonder how important it is to use all the parts of Kirtan Kriya. You know what they are:

1.    Posture is easy. On the floor (yoga mat or sheep skin) cross-legged or sitting in a chair with your feet on the floor.

2.    Breath comes naturally.

3.    Mantra of course is our famous Saa Taa Naa Maa.

4.    Mudra: Touching the fingertips in sequence thumb to index, middle, ring, and pinkie. Never backwards.

5.     And yes, finally the focus of concentration. You simply imagine the sound coming in the top of your head and out your forehead between your eyebrows in a sweeping motion. This may seem difficult, especially if you’re a beginner, but it is a critically important part of Kirtan Kriya and must be done as best you can.

To make it smoother, I’ve described what I call the hinge effect. As you chant, or whisper, or silently say the mantra, you gently lower your jaw and imagine this hinge bringing down and out the sound. Then you close your mouth and do it again. It’s actually quite easy.

And important for the complete effect of the meditation. That’s it for now.

Enjoy the practice of the simple yet profound Kirtan Kriya.
