Many economically disadvantaged students in Western Pennsylvania rely on school-provided breakfast and lunch to function, and even still, it’s not always enough to get them through a day of learning.
At Aliquippa Elementary, some kindergarten teachers are among the many educators in the region using crowdfunding for snacks. Teachers in dozens of schools in the region — a majority concentrated in the Pittsburgh Public Schools district, and spanning from Sto-Rox to Altoona — are using DonorsChoose to raise funds for classroom snacks and other basic resources ([link removed]) .
Also, members of a recently formed nonprofit called Manchester Neighbors have been trying to navigate city processes and a court fight ([link removed]) as a proposed $740 million development works its way through the City Planning Commission, on its way to their neighborhood’s border.
