** OCYD POST-ELECTION STATEMENT
------------------------------------------------------------

This isn’t the outcome we were expecting nationally, and certainly not the one we were hoping for. But it has happened, and it’s okay to feel sad or fearful about what lies ahead. Today, we grieve for our friends and classmates from marginalized backgrounds who will feel the most immediate and painful impacts of a second Trump presidency. We grieve for women whose access to reproductive health remains in limbo. We grieve for students who don’t yet know what this means for financial aid and college affordability. There are many things to be saddened by, and yet there are also things to find solace in.

To everyone who joined us to knock on doors, made calls and cast their vote - thank you. Young voters showed up in droves to stand against the hate that Donald Trump & the Republican Party represents, and that momentum is powerful. This moment is a call to stay together, lean on each other, reflect and engage.

There is still so much to be hopeful for in Orange County. Key races from the House of Representatives to the state legislature and local contests are still being determined as ballots arrive and are cured. Moving forward, we must focus on uplifting those who share our vision for a better future rather than alienating voters by attempting to appeal to those who cannot be persuaded. Real change means bringing more people into this fight, creating a movement that speaks to the needs of all, and staying committed to building the future we deserve.

Orange County Young Democrats is committed to standing on the frontlines of the resistance alongside each and every one of you. To any of our friends and family in marginalized communities - we are here and we are ready to battle for your rights.

This past Saturday, November 9, Orange County Young Democrats received the Community Ally of the Year Award from STRUT in honor of our work in the community to uplift LGBTQ+ voices and allies. In the face of an increasingly hostile national environment, Orange County Young Democrats’ commitment to fighting for the LGBTQ+ community is unwavering - we will not let an increasingly hostile national environment sway us.


** WHAT’S NEXT?

We aren’t going to take the loss nationally laying down. Campaigns around Orange County are still ballot curing to close gaps or increasing winning margins. For now, we are focusing our efforts to help Democrats in Southern California across the finish line - these cures will help Democrats up and down the ballot.
