Hi friend,
On Wednesday, we woke up to the devastating news that Donald Trump will once again be president.
I know to many of us, this outcome was unfathomable. We went up against MAGA extremism with our message of joy, fairness, and democracy, and lost. We have a lot to learn from this failure.
But I want you to remember what I have always said in times like these: Don’t agonize. Organize.
Those of us who fought through the four years of Trump’s first term in the White House should remember how essential the organized resistance was to building our movement and halting the worst of Trump’s agenda.
We found new ways to connect with our neighbors, to protect our communities, to combat hate, and to build the organizing capacity that allowed us to win in 2018 and 2020.
Because it can be tempting to agonize. It can be easy to give up the fight after a loss like this. It can be harder at first to keep pushing–but as that push gathers momentum, that fight is worth it.
As you know, protecting our environment and tackling the climate crisis have been top priorities for me in Congress. Trump has promised to “drill, baby, drill” on Day 1, and there’s no doubt they’re going to try to gut the absolutely critical Green New Deal priorities we passed during the Biden administration. But our fight for union jobs, environmental justice, and climate action will never let up. For the sake of our health, our economy, our national security, and our moral standing in the world, we have to fight back.
That means continuing to organize within our Green New Deal movement, bringing more people into the fold, building our capacity for resisting the Trump agenda at every turn, and making it clear to the Far-Right that those of us who fight for a livable future aren’t going anywhere. After all, our Green New Deal movement was born during the early days of Donald Trump, in response to the existential threats of the climate crisis and his failed leadership. Now we must do it again.
It’s been a long campaign season, so I hate to ask, but if you can spare a few bucks today to begin taking that first step into the work we have ahead, you can use this link to donate.
Tuesday was a dark day for America, make no mistake. But we’re not lost. We can’t afford to walk away. We have to hold onto the hope that lies within the progress we’ve made and the promise of the future. We have to recommit to the work of regaining the trust of voters with an authentic agenda of bold change. Don’t agonize. Organize!
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
