Veterans Day began as Armistice Day in 1919, marking the first anniversary of the end of World War I.

In 1938, Armistice Day became an official holiday to honor veterans of “the Great War.”

By 1954, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day to honor veterans from every conflict and branch, becoming a national day of remembrance.
