Dear John:

Happy Veterans Day!

On Veterans Day, we get to do something we should do every day: thank those who serve and honor those who have gone before us. America is forever grateful for the sacrifices our veterans and their families have made for our nation. It is their heroism that has made the United States the greatest nation in the world, and I would like to express my personal gratitude for all the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces.

Today, less than 1% of Americans choose to serve in our military, and it is not a decision made lightly. Our service members must make unique sacrifices, from enduring physically and mentally harsh conditions to the threat of war and serving in combat. With this comes a unique sense of pride and an active, supportive community to can lean on during the hard times.

I encourage young people to take the time to speak with a veteran in their life. Ask them about their service and their experiences, and what it means to part of something bigger than themselves. I know you will learn something valuable, and maybe even become inspired to serve yourself.

The nation thanks our veterans and admires service members at every level. May every American always remember that this is the land of the free because of the brave. We will never be able to fully repay the debt we owe to you, but we will continue to honor you, and those of us in Washington will never stop working for you.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your service, and God bless America.
