Dear Friend,
I am proud to proclaim today, Monday, November 11 as Veteran’s Day [ [link removed] ] in Michigan.
Michigan is home to more than 516,000 veterans, and nearly 10,000 Air and Army National Guard members and their families.
Our veterans and their families serve our nation and stand up for our values. They have sacrificed so much to ensure that we can all enjoy the freedoms we cherish and live good lives in Michigan. That’s why we are united—across the state and party lines—on investing in veteran health care, housing, economic opportunity, and so much more.
This Veterans Day, I’m excited to share some of the ways we’re standing up for Michigan’s servicemembers, veterans, and military families. [ [link removed] ] My office has appointed over 100 active military and veterans to numerous statewide boards and commissions to ensure their voices are heard. We have continuously invested in facilities for veterans and servicemembers and provided paths to opportunity and career advancement.
Michigan will always keep its commitment to service members, veterans, and their families.
They fought for us, so we are going to fight for them.
Sincerely,
signature
Gretchen Whitmer
Governor
*Expanding Opportunity for Veterans*
My administration has worked to ensure Michigan’s service members, veterans, and their families have the opportunities and resources they need to succeed. We have increased outreach to veterans, connecting them and their families to affordable health care, attainable housing, and paths to education and good-paying jobs.

* In 2021, I signed bipartisan bills [ [link removed] ] to make it easier for military service members, veterans, and their families to receive a professional license within the state.
* Last May, I signed a bipartisan bill expanding our National Guard tuition assistance program [ [link removed] ] to cover spouses and dependents, lowering the cost of higher education for military families. We also Announced a partnership between the Michigan National Guard (MING) and Michigan Helmets to Hardhats, a program connecting veterans to skill-training opportunities and careers in the construction trades.
* Last year, I signed bipartisan legislation [ [link removed] ] to ensure spouses of disabled veterans can maintain property tax exemptions, even after their spouse passes away, lowering costs for themselves and their families.
* We have also made significant investments in suicide prevention, opened two new Michigan Veteran Homes, and granted all veterans free access to state parks.
Today and every day, the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is here to meet the needs of Michigan veterans. If you are a veteran, make sure you know the benefits and resources available to you by calling 800-MICH-VET (800-642-4838) or visiting www.michigan.gov/MVAA [ [link removed] ].

*Veterans Are Helping Build the U.S. Navy’s Future in Michigan*
In July, we announced the Michigan Maritime Manufacturing (M3) Initiative, a bold new partnership to make our state a national leader in shipbuilding and defense manufacturing and create new career opportunities for thousands of veterans in Michigan.

The M3 Initiative will build on our progress to help us make the next generation of ships and submarines right here in Michigan, protecting our national security while creating and supporting thousands of good-paying, high-skill jobs.
The growth of maritime careers across Michigan’s defense sector also provides opportunities for veterans to serve their country in a new way. The M3 Initiative will add 2,500 new veteran careers each year and represent the highest labor force growth in the United States.

*Veterans Small Business Week: November 11-15*
Today marks the start of Veterans Small Business Week [ [link removed] ]. It is a week dedicated to recognizing the hard work of our veterans who have chosen to embark on the path of small business ownership.
Small businesses, including those owned by veterans, are the backbone of our communities and create jobs, spur innovation, and boost local demand for professional services. We are incredibly grateful for those veterans and their families who continue to give back to their communities after serving our country in uniform.
I encourage everyone to shop at a small business and support their communities!
