[link removed] [[link removed]] Happy Veterans Day, friend.
Every day I am inspired by the valor, selflessness, and courage of those who serve our country. I am also reminded that this day is about more than honoring their dedication.
It’s about keeping our promise and taking care of our veterans and their families in thanks for all they’ve given us.
San Diego County has one of the largest veteran communities in the country. We have a special responsibility to care for those who served and their families when they come back home.
When my father returned from Vietnam, he poured all his selflessness and energy into raising a family, starting a business, and becoming an integral part of our church and local community.
But far too many veterans don’t get those opportunities. Today, our veterans disproportionately struggle with homelessness, drug addiction, and mental health.
Veterans often fight a second battle when they come back home — lack of support networks, underfunded healthcare, and gaps in affordable housing access leaves them with few options and little hope. They deserve better than that.
For all they’ve sacrificed, we owe them a place to turn the corner before they move on to their next chapter of life.
I am committed to using my position on the Board of Supervisors to keep San Diego’s veterans safe and supported.
Thank you for honoring them,
— Monica Montgomery Steppe
