Behind every overdose death is someone’s child, partner, friend, or loved one. To date, the United States has lost over one million lives to drug overdose during this crisis. Drug overdoses have affected all communities across the United States. Yet there are notable racial and ethnic disparities in overdose trends that have emerged over the past 25 years, even though people of all races and ethnicities use drugs at similar rates.

On November 19, I will discuss these overdose rates — and the stories behind these data — with researchers and people working on the ground to end overdose, including Dr. Manuel Cano, Dr. Helena Hansen, Lindsay King Cooney, Andrea Medley, and James Schmidt.

We will share recent racial and ethnic trends in overdose mortality, explore the root causes of these disparities, and offer solutions to curb the overdose crisis.

We all care deeply about ending the overdose crisis and supporting our loved ones. I hope you will join me online to learn from experts across the country about how an accurate understanding of race and overdose is crucial to saving lives.
