Thousands of people fleeing Israeli airstrikes arrive from Lebanon

Dear John,

I’m Tarek, and I work with UNHCR on the ground in Lebanon, where I witness firsthand the devastating impact of the deadly attacks on thousands of innocent people. I wanted to personally reach out to you from the field to say thank you for keeping the people in Lebanon in your thoughts.

For the last 12 years, I have met families daily who had to leave everything they know behind— children, parents and grandparents, searching for a place where they can feel safe again. Now, over 1.2 million people have been displaced within Lebanon, and far too many are struggling to find shelter and security. It’s heartbreaking, in all that it means.

UNHCR workers

With help from supporters like you, we have distributed more than 161,000 relief items and provided cash assistance to over 275,000 vulnerable individuals. We are doing everything we can to support families who have lost everything. It’s not easy, but when I see a family get the help they so desperately need, I know that your support is making a real difference.

As winter approaches, the challenges become even harder and the need for humanitarian aid is needed more than ever. We are doing everything we can to prepare winter assistance for displaced families, but we can’t do it alone. Your support today means we can ensure that our warehouses are kept fully stocked with blankets, mattresses and other winter essentials to help these families get through the cold months ahead.

Sorry for the long email, I need to head back to work now, but before I go, I just want to say—on behalf of all of us here in Lebanon, and especially the families you’re helping—thank you, truly.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Tarek Al Haddad
