JOHN, Happy Veterans Day.
Being a Veteran means that you made a decision to put your country before yourself.
It means that you have sworn an oath of loyalty — not to a religion, or to a party, or to a person. You swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
But it’s more than that.
Being a Veteran has often meant that the promises your country made to you were not always upheld. It meant being lied into wars. It meant that you had to watch as politicians refused to care for your friends as they got sick when they came home from those wars. It meant that the ideals and values you swore to uphold were often cast aside by the people in charge.
VoteVets has worked for the past twenty years to rectify that. To hold leadership accountable. To take the fight to Republicans on the ground they thought was safest. To show them, and the country, that Republicans may be the party of war, but they are not the party of the Military, or of Veterans.
We have had setbacks and shortcomings along the way. We have seen hardship. But we have also made progress. We have won. We have defeated them — and we will again.
And as we grieve our losses after the results of last week's election, we also celebrate our wins. Principled leaders will be in positions of power when it matters most, and that is thanks to you.
So today, care for one another. Care for yourselves.
But tomorrow, steel yourselves for the fights ahead.
VoteVets will, as ever, be the tip of the spear. And we need you with us.
Thank you.
