Veterans Day, observed on November 11, originated as "Armistice Day" on November 11, 1919, marking the first anniversary of the end of World War I.

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day to honor ALL U.S. military veterans.
Did You Know?
As of 2023, there were approximately 16.5 million military veterans in the United States, representing 6.1% of the total civilian population age 18 and over.
* Age: 33.4% of veterans are 75 years or older, while only 8.3% are younger than 35.
* Ethnicity: 72.2% of veterans are White alone (not Hispanic or Latino), 12.6% are Black or African American alone, and 8.5% are Hispanic or Latino (of any ethnicity).
* Service Periods: 33.0% of veterans served during the Vietnam War, 24.8% during the Persian Gulf War, and 28.0% during the Post-9/11 period.
